The Waitsfield-Fayston Volunteer Fire Department provides service to both Waitsfield and Fayston and maintains a mutual assistance agreement with other nearby fire departments.  The Town of Fayston pays 40% of the annual operating and capital costs of the department. This 60/40 split was determined by the approximate percentage of responses within each town over the years.  In addition to the funding agreement, many Fayston residents serve as volunteers.  As both towns grow, the breakdown of calls should be monitored to ensure that funding remains fairly allocated.

    2006 Activities
In 2066, the Department responded to 76 calls (see below), the highest number of calls in the department's history.  In comparison, the department averaged 47 calls per year from 1997 through 2001, with the highest number of calls (60) in 2001 during that period.

Firefighters participated in a number of training sessions in 2006 with neighboring departments including ladder training with Warren.  The new repeater is on-line and the department is receiving improved reception.  The department participated in two emergency management classes organized by FEMA, which was required in order to be eligible for grants.  The department also took meth lab training to learn how to respond to situations where the making of drugs is present.  Four members are training with Mad River Rescue, which included six walk-throughs of different buildings in Waitsfield and Fayston.  The department has given two fire extinguisher classes.  One member is enrolled in paramedic training and another member is enrolled in Firefighter 1, which involves 130 hours of classwork.
