Flood Insurance

National Flood Insurance Program

The Town of Waitsfield participates in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), which makes federally backed flood insurance available for all buildings, whether they are in a floodplain or not. Most homeowners' or renters' insurance does not cover damages due to flooding.  Flood insurance coverage applies whether the flooding is the result of heavy rains, snow melt, blocked storm drainage systems, or other causes.  It protects against losses to buildings and their contents, but not the land surrounding them.  (To be considered a flood, the waters must cover at least two acres or affect at least two properties.)  The NFIP insures buildings, including mobile homes, with two types of coverage: structural and contents.  Structural coverage is for the walls, floors, insulation, furnace, and other items permanently attached to the structure.  Contents coverage may be purchased separately provided the contents are in an insurable building.

Flood insurance is available to property owners both within and outside of mapped flood zones and different types of policies are available depending on the flood risk.
